Speaker wire is measured in gauges of thickness, or AWG (American Wire Gauge). The sizes most commonly used are 18 AWG, 16 AWG, 14 AWG and 12 AWG, 18 gauge being the smallest of the group and 12 the larger because the smaller the gauge, the thicker the wire. The longer the cable is from the receiver to the speaker, the more signal loss is acquired. Running longer lengths requites a larger gauge. It is typically not recommended to use anything less than a 16 AWG speaker wire. There are generally two types of speaker wire commonly found. Standard or Clear Jacket Cable, and CL-2 or CL-3 rated speaker wire for in-wall installations. For normal installations you will use 2 conductor wire, which means there are 2 cables inside the one outer jacket. For B-Wire, Systems using Volume Controls and For Dual Coice Coil Speakers you would use 4 conductor cable. There are types that use premium oxygen-free copper which produce a strong consistent signal, and shielded speaker wire prevents interference from other sources, such as video cabling and electrical wiring. There is also Plenum Rated Cable, which is to be used in Commercial Plenum Spaces; a space in a building that can facilitate air circulation for heating and air conditioning systems.
