What Is Direct Burial or Burial Grade Cable
Low Voltage Direct Burial Cable (DBC) or Underground / Outdoor / Water Block Wire is especially designed to be buried directly underground without any additional covering or conduit to protect it. High quality bury grade cable is manufactured to withstand outdoor conditions as heat, moisture, conductivity, and various soil conditions.
Not All Power Limited DBC Underground Rated Wire Is The Same
Now that you have completed your landscape and/or audio project, or your residential garage, bunk house or commercial building is finished, you may want to wire weatherproof rock or patio speakers outside in the garden, on the deck, or by the pool, or you need to run coaxial for TV or CCTV security wire to another building, or wire CAT5e or CAT6 Ethernet across the yard or to an adjacent building. At this point, you realize that burying the cable underground is the safest, most durable, and by far the most esthetically pleasing way to go. However, very few low voltage bury grade cables are truly intended to be buried underground.
Many companies promote their indoor rated PVC cables as also direct burial or underground cables. However, In-wall rated cables do not have the necessary internal construction for direct burial and many outdoor applications. SCP highly recommends the use of burial grade wire manufactured specifically for direct burial and outdoor applications. SCP typically uses a specific direct burial cable jacket such as LLDPE, and internal construction components specifically for our direct burial applications. LLDPE stands for Linear Low-Density Polyethylene. LLDPE is superior to PVC in durability, water permeability, and other environmental factors.
LLDPE has resistance to a wider range of chemicals as compared to PVC. It is immune from biological attack by microorganisms. Microorganisms could attack PVC and use the plasticizer as a source of food. LLDPE is resistant to burrowing animals, PVC is not. It has a lower permeability to methane and a lower moisture vapor transmission rate than PVC. LLDPE also retains its physical properties due to long-term soil burial. PVC's physical properties diminish in time due to loss of plasticizer. LLDPE is more resistant to ultra-violet light and remains flexible at temperatures well below freezing at -25°C. PVC loses its flexibility and becomes brittle at -25°C
SCP LLPDE direct burial cables include a water-blocking technology of either gel filled ("flooded") or water blocking tape. These technologies prevent unwanted moisture from reaching the cable conductors where corrosion could begin.

This is a true "direct burial" cable unlike other "so-called" bury grade wire that use inferior PVC based jacketing.
